Camille Williams-Taylor, Director of Education

I am pleased to extend greetings on behalf of the Durham District School Board (DDSB) senior team as we present the 2023 Director’s Annual Report. I am delighted to provide you with a snapshot of the many vibrant and dynamic activities that have unfolded across the District throughout this remarkable year.

As we reflect on the past year, I am grateful to engage with the strong teams throughout the system. I extend my thanks to our incredible students, families, dedicated staff, the Board of Trustees, and our supportive community for their unwavering encouragement. I am always reminded of our purpose in putting students at the centre of what we do and together, we have demonstrated our collective commitment to fostering student learning and well-being.

Our journey this school year has been marked by a shared dedication to implementing DDSB-wide initiatives aimed at enhancing student experiences by prioritizing well-being and improving learning. From targeted and precise reading instruction to elevate early literacy, to the introduction of financial literacy modules for secondary students, and the innovative Grade 10 Digital Technology and Innovations in the Changing World course, our staff are working tirelessly to provide enriching educational experiences.

In response to the Ministry of Education’s renewed emphasis on mathematics through the Math Action Achievement Plan, we are excited to launch DDSB’s new math strategy. We believe this will empower our students with the math skills essential for success in the globalized workplace.

We recognize the crucial role that mental health and well-being play in the lives of our students and staff. At the Durham District School Board, we are dedicated to actively supporting the daily mental health needs of our school community. Our commitment is to deliver inclusive, identity-affirming, and culturally relevant support to both students and staff. We aim to establish strong connections for everyone, ensuring that they can readily access and benefit from the pathways leading to these essential supports. By fostering a culture of inclusion , and guided by our responsibilities to uphold Indigenous rights and human rights, we have been working diligently to create an environment where every member of our community is treated with dignity and respect and, feels seen, valued, and supported on their unique journey. Together, we prioritize the holistic development of our students and staff, creating a space where mental health and well-being are a top priority.

Having the pleasure of spending time with students from across DDSB, I am continually inspired by their willingness to challenge themselves. Our staff play a pivotal role in supporting the needs of the system and creating meaningful learning communities that foster personal and intellectual growth, preparing our graduates for a world that values both compassion and innovation.

Durham Region is growing, and we anticipate five new or rebuilt schools set to open between September 2024 and September 2026. The demand for new educational facilities continues to rise, reflecting the thriving communities within our region.

As we look forward to 2024, let us continue to create memorable moments, celebrate remarkable student achievements, and foster personal and professional growth for all. Together, we embark on a journey filled with promise and potential for the youth of tomorrow.
