Igniting the Reading Brain: DDSB's Journey Towards Literacy for All
In a series of unique initiatives, the Durham District School Board (DDSB) is making important strides in shifting literacy instruction for all learners. This success stems from a comprehensive approach that implements systematic and evidence-based literacy practices, aligning with recommendations from the Right to Read Inquiry. This has resulted in a shift in teaching methods and improvements in student learning.
The journey began in the 2021-2022 school year with collaboration between the Teaching and Learning Department and the Inclusive Student Services Department. This partnership led to the Early Reading Literacy Pilot Project, involving Speech-Language Pathologists, literacy coaches and classroom educators in Kindergarten through Grade 3. The focus was on delivering systematic and explicit instruction to build foundational literacy skills.
In February 2022, the Ontario Human Rights Commission's Right to Read report was released, enhancing the ongoing initiatives within the DDSB. The recommendations from the report served to reinforce and strengthen the efforts. The release of the updated Language and English Curricula further fortified the work being undertaken.
Working alongside literacy facilitators, coaches, and Speech-Language Pathologists, educators are embracing this shift towards explicit teaching of foundational skills, while maintaining a continued focus on knowing the individual students who are at the core of their pedagogical practice. Financial support from the Ministry of Education further fueled the initiative, including funding for reading interventions, staff support, and early reading tools.
The impact is evident: literacy teams supported 53 schools, and survey data showed a significant increase in educators' comfort and understanding of structured literacy and an increase in foundational literacy skills, confidence and joy of reading for students.
As DDSB continues its literacy transformation, a Communication Plan ensures stakeholders stay informed. Monthly newsletters, system-wide emails, and ongoing professional development opportunities disseminate information and resources.
DDSB's commitment to effective literacy instruction for all students stands as a beacon of success, showcasing that a systematic, evidence-based approach, coupled with collaboration, empowers students, educators, and the community. The journey to literacy excellence is ongoing, with DDSB poised to lead in shaping the future minds of Ontario.
